Local Council Tax Reduction
What is it?
Local Council Tax Reduction is a national welfare benefit scheme that gives help towards your Council Tax bill. From April 2013 the Government have given Local Authorities the powers to create their own scheme's therefore the amount of Local Council Tax Reduction you can claim will depend on the policy your Local Authority have adopted. Waveney District Council will base any application for Local Council Tax Reduction on a maximum 91.5% of benefit. 8.5% must be paid for by any Working Age customer, regardless of their income. Pension-age customers will have their assessment based on the full 100% charge. There are two kinds of Local Council Tax Reduction available for people who have to pay Council Tax. These are:
- ordinary Local Council Tax Reduction and
- Second Adult Rebate
Ordinary Local Council Tax Reduction
The amount of benefit you would qualify for depends on:
- your income (and that of your partner if you have one)
- your capital (and that of your partner if you have one)
- the income of any other adults (apart from your partner) that live with you
- the amount of Council Tax you pay
You cannot get Local Council Tax Reduction if:
- you, or your partner between you, have more than £16,000 in savings, unless you are in receipt of Guarantee Credit.
A partner is someone you are married to or in a civil partnership with, or someone you live with as if you were married to them, or in a civil partnership with.
Once Local Council Tax Reduction is awarded your Council Tax account will be amended and an adjusted bill will be sent to you.
You only need to claim Local Council Tax Reduction once, after that you will have to tell us if you have a change in your circumstances. We will also check our information against information held by pension companies, the Department for Work and Pensions and employers.
