An overview of the Standards
Committee |
View Standards Committee membership information
The Standards Committee is part of a new ethical framework
introduced into Local Government by the Local Government Act
2000.
Under that framework every Council has to adopt a
Code of
Conduct, which all its District, Town and Parish Councillors
must observe.
The Code of
Conduct seeks to ensure that Councillors are open, fair and
transparent in the conduct of their official duties and that they
respect others in the conduct of their public lives and ensure that
any decision-making on behalf of their Council is properly carried
out.
The Standards Committee is
responsible, in conjunction with the Monitoring Officer, for
ensuring the promotion and maintenance of high standards of conduct
by Councillors. It is also responsible for the provision of
training for Councillors on the Council’s Code of Conduct and has
adopted a procedure for local determination of allegations of
misconduct due to be implemented from May 2008.
The Committee is made up of five District Councillors, three Parish
Councillors and three Independent members appointed by the
Council. | |
