Waveney District Council's Community Development Section works with communities in a way that helps empower individuals, community groups and organisations enabling them to identify their needs and resources and develop ways of delivering their own goals.

The team comprises of a Community Development Manager, Community Regeneration Co-ordinator - Objective 2, a Community Regeneration Assistant and a Grants Coordinator.

The team supports existing community groups and voluntary organisations, helping them to work together and with statutory agencies with a view to positively influencing the quality of people's lives by improving social inclusion through community participation. New funding opportunities through programmes such as Fair share and the lottery are becoming available through central government to assist this. A Community Development Strategy for Lowestoft has been produced in consultation with the local community and Objective 2 funding gained to support community economic regeneration in Lowestoft.

Efforts are currently being focussed on areas of deprivation in Lowestoft and will be broadened in order to encourage and involve communities throughout the District. Partnership projects include North Lowestoft Sure Start, Lowestoft into Work and the Community Economic Regeneration Co-ordinators Project with Great Yarmouth Borough Council.
