Repairs to Southwold Harbour Fender
Work has been scheduled to repair damage to parts of the timber fender at the seaward end of the North Southwold Harbour’s North Pier

Work has been scheduled to repair damage to parts of the timber fender at the seaward end of Southwold Harbour’s North Pier. It will take place during normal working hours over a six-week period commencing 25 March 2008, in an attempt to minimise any inconvenience to local residents and visitors.

The fender prevents boats from colliding with rock slopes at the harbour entrance. Contractor Edmund Nuttall Ltd, will carry out the work on behalf of Waveney District Council. It will involve the removal and replacement of steel piles and timber fendering that has been damaged by waves and worn by shingle.

In addition, work will take place to create temporary platforms that will support the construction plant for the duration of the project. This may involve the redistribution of parts of original rock slopes, but these will be reinstated upon completion.

All work will take place landward of the fender line and so navigation of the harbour entrance will not be affected. Work is planned to take place during normal working hours and not at weekends, therefore potential inconvenience to local residents and visitors from activities such as pile driving will be minimised.

A fenced compound area to store cabins, materials and machinery, will be set up on the Denes immediately seaward of the Harbour car park. The construction area around the seaward end of the north pier will also be fenced to protect the public from hazards. Notices to Mariners will also be issued to advise seafarers of the works.
