Olympic Handover
Celebrations |
Olympic Handover Flags will be raised at Lowestoft and Southwold to
celebrate London becoming the Olympic Games Host City, on Sunday 24
August.
Waveney District Council
is asking people to join in the festivities, when Olympic Handover
Flags are raised at both Lowestoft and Southwold Lifeguard
Stations. The events are being held to celebrate the moment London
becomes the official Olympic Games Host City, on Sunday 24
August.
The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games has arranged
the event, which is a first in the history of the Olympic and
Paralympic Games. The iconic London Olympic Handover Flag will be
raised in Lowestoft and Southwold, simultaneously with regions
around the UK.
Anybody wishing to join in the celebrations is asked to arrive at
Lowestoft Lifeguard Station (between East Point Pavilion and
Claremont Pier) or Southwold Lifeguard Station (near the pier) at
2.10pm for a 2:20pm start.
Waveney’s Olympic Handover Flags will be two of over 500 flags
delivered to locations including HM Armed Forces, embassies around
the world, City Halls, British Council offices and Foreign and
Commonwealth offices. Local sports and cultural stakeholders will
be on hand to help raise the Olympic Handover Flag for Lowestoft
and Southwold.
Councillor Wendy Mawer, Waveney’s Portfolio Holder for Regeneration
said: “On the back of the country’s current Olympic success, we are
really proud to be able to fly the flag at Lowestoft and Southwold
to celebrate the beginning of four exciting years.”
Councillor George Hawes, Chairman of Waveney District Council
added: “Celebrating the Olympic Handover will be an honour for the
district of Waveney. We must now support The Active Waveney Sports
Partnership and all the potential Olympians that live and train in
our area and we hope we will be seeing them in Team GB in
2012”.
Amongst the locations in the UK, Olympic Handover Flags will be
raised at landmark areas such as the Unst in the Shetland Isles,
the most northerly point in the UK and Land’s End in Cornwall, the
most southerly point. Flags will also be raised at Lowestoft, the
most easterly town in England and the Isles of Scilly, the most
westerly
point. | |
