Council Leader Says "We don't want to be part of Norfolk"
Mark Bee speaks out on proposals for unitary structures
As you may be aware, central government have asked the Boundary Committee to investigate particular options for the future of local government in Suffolk.

"I am understandably concerned that considerable amounts of taxpayers money is going to be spent looking at a restructure that the residents of Waveney have no appetite for. While these investigations take place, we will have to work hard to avoid a period of paralysis and uncertainty when we should be focusing all our energies on service delivery.

"But what is most remarkable is that central Government appears to be considering a complete annexing of Waveney to Norfolk and I cannot imagine that the people of Waveney would stand that for one second. I have never been convinced that a cross county merger with Great Yarmouth is workable. It does not stack up in terms of finance and numbers, but this revelation goes considerably further and genuinely affects the historic boundaries of Suffolk and Norfolk.

"Naturally we will work with the Boundary Committee to help them find the best solution and the best outcome for the people of Waveney, but becoming part of Norfolk is the last thing we should be considering and the sooner that conclusion is reached, the better."
