Shovel it Yourself for Compost Awareness Week
To celebrate ‘Compost Awareness Week 2008,’ Waveney District Council will be offering residents the chance to pick up some free compost

To celebrate ‘Compost Awareness Week 2008,’ which runs from 4 to 10 May, Waveney District Council will be offering residents the chance to pick up some free compost.

As part of a countywide initiative to encourage home composting, the Council is inviting residents to bring a spade and a container to the Waveney District Council Depot at Rotterdam Road, Lowestoft on Saturday 10 May between 10.00am and 1.00pm to help themselves to free quality compost. Residents are advised that the compost is subject to availability and reminded that they will have to ‘help themselves.’

The event is being held to thank the people of Waveney for their efforts in recycling, as the compost is actually made from recycled garden waste collected from the Council’s green bins. The compost illustrates what happens to garden waste put out for collection and allows people to experience its benefits on their gardens.

John Everingham, Waveney’s Waste Management Compliance Officer, said: “After a successful event last year, it was decided to repeat the offer. The aim is to show residents the results of their recycling and promote the idea of home composting - showing people just how easy it is. An average household in Suffolk could divert an astounding 220kg of organic waste a year from landfill by home composting.

“We will also be providing information on home composting and how you can order a compost bin from as little as £17! In addition, anyone living in Suffolk who places an order during Compost Awareness Week will be eligible for the prize of £50 of garden centre vouchers, which have been donated by DHL, the logistics company that deliver the bins.”

Throughout 2008, residents are able to buy a 220 litre compost bin for £17, a 330 litre bin for £20 or a 250 litre KOMP compost bin for £40, all including delivery. Visit the website www.recyclenow.com/compost or phone 0845 077 0757 for more details.
