Waveney District Council has been supporting ‘Change your World,’ a
week-long campaign built around the idea that by taking small steps
together we can make a big change happen. The initiative from
Sustrans encourages people to make one less car journey during the
week, in an effort to reduce the traffic on our roads.

The Council’s Cabinet
has pledged to take part and has agreed to swap one car trip
between 30 June and 5 July and walk, cycle, use public
transport or car share or not make the trip at all. In
addition, all Council staff have been encouraged to take part
during the week. Amazingly, if we all drove just one less
journey a week we’d reduce car traffic by 10%.
Take your first step now at

chance to win a Center Parcs family break, Ridgeback bikes, a
National Trust camping break, T-shirts by Howies, a Family &
Friends railcard and other prizes.
Councillor Mark Bee, Leader of Waveney District Council commented:
“We can all become over-dependent on our cars and it takes
initiatives such as this to make us aware of the impact this can
have on the environment. All those little journeys soon add up and
so it is important to stop and think if it is essential that you
take the car. It is not a big ask, to swap just one journey this
week, but it will have a big impact on traffic in the district.
We’re going to give it a go and we’d like to encourage others to do
the same.
“The Council adopted a Sustainability Policy and Strategy in May,
that outlines its commitment to consider the environmental impacts
of its activities and take steps to reduce them. We therefore felt
that this was an important event and have promoted it to our
members and staff.”

Sustrans Regional Director Nigel Brigham said: "Transport and its
environmental impact is becoming an increasingly important issue
for councils, so it is great to see members and officers at Waveney
District Council signing up to Change Your World. They know that a
ten per cent reduction in traffic will make a significant
difference to congestion on Waveney's roads.
"This campaign shows that transport improvements don't have to cost
the earth. Individual actions can make a big difference and will
benefit their health and the environment too."
