Waveney District Council today asked visitors to
Lowestoft’s beaches to think of others and ensure that they tidy up
behind them when they leave.
Broken glass bottles are being retrieved as part of the Council’s
regular cleansing programme and Cllr Stephen Ardley, Portfolio
Holder for Health & Wellbeing believes everyone who visits has
a responsibility to ensure our beaches remain safe.
"With the weather in Waveney picking up as we approach the holiday
season there is no better time to enjoy our award winning beaches.
But the thoughtlessness of a small minority is a great concern and
I hope that people will try to be more careful and more considerate
of others."
WDC’s dedicated team undertake daily ‘rakes’ of Lowestoft’s beaches
with specialist heavy equipment and will continue to do so
throughout the summer season to help ensure beach cleanliness and
safety. Nevertheless, it is still the responsibility of visitors
and residents alike to think of others and take their rubbish with
them.
Cllr Ardley continued: "As part of our ongoing ‘Beach Safe’
campaign we are asking everyone to help us keep our beaches tidy
and beautiful. Litter is a problem, but when it becomes more
dangerous, we are dealing with a level of anti-social behaviour
which angers me enormously. It is both careless and thoughtless and
needs to stop.
"Anyone seen acting in a way that may cause harm to others will be
dealt with appropriately particularly as the police will be
increasing their beach-side patrols during the summer
season."
The Council would ask the public to be vigilant and to think of
others. If you see anything that causes you concern, please report
it, in confidence, to Waveney Police on 01986 835 300.
Waveney District Council’s Environment Support Officers also tackle
anti-social behaviour, from littering and fly-tipping to noise
pollution. If you would like to report anti-social activities,
please call the Council, in confidence on 01502 523
117.
