History
The Suffolk Area Youth Games was first staged in July 2000 as part
of the BAA Millennium Youth Games project initiated by Sport
England. The event was attended by over 500 children, which then
lead on to the staging of the first Suffolk Youth Games in
2001.
There are 7 local authority areas which make up the teams for the
Suffolk Youth Games:
The Teams
- Babergh
- Forest Heath
- Ipswich
- Mid Suffolk
- St Edmundsbury
- Suffolk Coastal
- Waveney
The champions of the first Youth Games in 2001 were Ipswich Borough
Council. 2002 saw the reigning champions, Ipswich being beaten by
St Edmundsbury in a close run competition with each of the seven
local authorities in Suffolk fielding strong teams. In 2003 Ipswich
regained the trophy. However, in 2004 the weather prevented the
overall trophy being presented as not all individual sports
competitions were completed due to rain. The Fair Play Award went
to Suffolk Coastal. In 2005, Waveney were victorious, also sharing
the Fair Play Trophy with Forest Heath! Waveney were champions
again in 2006. The 2007 Games saw Waveney scoring a hat trick -
bringing home the winners trophy for the third year in a row!
