Lowestoft Scores Race

History

Although the exact origin of the word ‘score’ is unknown, it is thought that it could be a corruption of ‘scour’, or possibly from the Old English ‘scora’, which is related to the Norse ‘skor’, meaning “to make or cut a line”. In the past there were twelve scores leading down from the High Street to what was know as the ‘Beach Village’. Many of the ‘Beach’ families would live in these scores, all of which are believed to have had ancient origins. One and two half scores have been lost to the Police Station, which was built over Frost’s Alley Score in 1979, and the Unilever Ice Cream & Frozen Foods (Bird’s Eye) factory was built on the lowest half of Wildes Score, while Maltsters Score has been diverted into Spurgeon Score.

Each year Waveney District Council hosts the Lowestoft Scores Race, Britain's most Easterly hill race. The Scores Race was resurrected in 1996, after an absence of several years, and the event has now been running for 11 years, six years under the management of Waveney District Council and more recently Waveney Valley Athletics Club with sponsorship being generously provided by Bird’s Eye. The event is also supported by the Market Traders Association and the Lowestoft Carnival Committee.

This arduous 4.75 mile race starts from Lowestoft’s historic High Street, along a fairly level course to Links Road, followed by 13 scores - includes 409 steps – finishing at the Triangle Market, High Street.

There are also two Junior races that precede the adult race for the 10 to 12 and 13 to 15 age groups, 1600 metres and 2000 metres respectively.

2003 saw all records smashed by former Olympian Paul Evans of Lowestoft, who completed the course in an eye watering time of 25 minutes and 37 seconds. Paul is a great supporter of the Race and this year he set competitors off for the 2006 event.
