Suffolk Disability Sport Academy
Suffolk-based disability charity Optua launched their Disability
Sport Academy project in September 2006. Optua’s Disability Sport
Academy helps disabled people get into sport and to date the
Academy has already successfully held three Showcase Days, the
first two being in Ipswich and Bury St Edmunds.
This major disability sport event visited Lowestoft on Saturday, 22
September 2007 and took place at Waveney Sports & Leisure
Centre, Water Lane. This free event was open to anyone with a
physical, sensory or learning disability and gave over 100 people
the chance to try out a range of Paralympic sports for free.
The 11 paralympic sports on the day were archery, athletics,
boccia, football, sailing, judo, wheelchair basketball, goalball,
sitting volleyball, table tennis and powerlifting.
Boccia is a sport similiar to French boules
(bowls)
Goalball is aimed at the visually impaired as the
ball has a bell inside
These Showcase Days are part of Optua's Suffolk Disability Sport
Academy project which aims to encourage more disabled people to get
into sport and maybe even help them on the road to the 2012
Paralympics in London.
Optua aims to do this in several ways:
- by running such Showcase Days across Suffolk
- by organising taster sessions for different sports such as
archery
- by helping to set up new disability sports clubs
- by helping those with disabilities find out what opportunities,
facilities and clubs are available in their area
- by working closely with such organisations as the local sports
clubs, County Sports Partnership (Suffolk Sport), Community Sports
Networks and local councils
The event was well supported by a range of local organisations
including the Adnams Charity, Suffolk Sport, Waveney District
Council, the Active Waveney Sports Partnership, Active Norfolk ,
the Suffolk Foundation, the Geoffrey Watling Charity and Harrod UK
Limited.
