You will also find a number of open spaces around some play areas and in several of our parks that are suitable for various informal games, such as football. We would ask though that you consider other users of the open spaces and ensure that games are appropriate to the available space.

Waveney District Council is the main provider of play facilities in the local area and is responsible for the development, improvement and maintenance of most of the play areas in Beccles, Bungay, Halesworth, Lowestoft and Southwold and a small number of rural locations. We also work with the Parish and Town Councils, Housing Associations and local Community Groups to assist with the delivery of play facilities.

We recognise that play is fundamentally important for children’s development and that the demands and opportunities for play continue to change. We are aiming to provide play areas that give children the freedom to explore and experiment, to be creative and interact with other children. Play can be formal or informal, so as well as traditional equipment we provide football and basketball areas, skate ramps, trim trails, youth shelters and seating, bins. Such provision increasingly incorporates landscaping and planting.

We are working towards providing well-designed new play areas while improving existing facilities. New and refurbished areas are designed with the help of the community. Our aim is to meet local needs and to complement neighbouring play areas as well as provide a suitable range of equipment for all ages within a reasonable distance.

Play areas are regularly inspected and risk assessments made to help maintain the assets in a safe condition. Within the Parks Team we have a dedicated officer whose job it is to regularly inspect the play areas. During the inspection safety checks are made on the equipment and the site examined for other hazards, such as broken glass. The inspector carries the tools necessary for carrying out routine maintenance and simple repairs immediately. Larger works may require specialist contractors and/or materials and are reported back to the office and programmed accordingly. Further to this we carry out quarterly engineering inspections and commission independent annual inspections.

Please contact us if you need to report anything wrong with the play areas, be it broken equipment, vandalism, glass and excessive litter or anti social behaviour. We will respond promptly to help correct the fault.
