About Kirkley Fen Park

Kirkley Fen ParkFen Park, as it is more commonly known, is in every sense a community green space. First mentioned in the local press in 1903, it was redeveloped by Mr Powell, of the Lion Press, between 1920 and 1930. He introduced both a boating lake and menagerie. Today, the ‘Friends of Fen Park’ are providing the impetus for the park’s refurbishment.

Entering the main gate of Southwell Road, pass the newly planted sensory garden and there is a well-used children’s play area. Beyond this there are opportunities for informal recreation on the grassy slope that goes down to the water’s edge - the main feature of the park.

The park’s trees suffered extensively in the great storm of 1987, but it now has a wide range of specimens, from the newly planted to several quite mature and imposing trees. The area around the ponds provides a semi-natural habitat for a variety of wildlife and a number of seats allow visitors to sit and enjoy the views across the water.

Whilst the pond itself, with its large islands, offers huge benefit to wildlife, it also requires extensive refurbishment to maintain this habitat. The Friends of Fen Park, along with a number of partners, are working alongside Waveney District Council to regenerate the pond and ensure its continued success in the long-term.
