Diversity & Equal Opportunities

The Council is currently consulting on its draft Comprehensive Equality Scheme (opens new window) . The scheme brings together all of the Council's statutory equality duties under one document. There is currently a considerable amount of work being done across the Council to move the equality and diversity agenda forwards and to achieve level 2 of the equality standard for local government by September 2008.

A three-year action plan will be developed based on the comments received through the consultation process. Please let Carol Lower in the Human Resources Team have any comments that you may have on the draft scheme.

The Council's Race Equality Scheme(opens new window) can be accessed on-line.

Throughout its work, Waveney District Council is committed to reflecting the full diversity of the community it serves and to promoting equality of opportunity for everyone.

The Council has an equal opportunities and diversity policy (opens new window) and aims to ensure that job applicants and employees are not disadvantaged, for example because of their gender, race, colour, religion, disability or sexual orientation. We undertake equal opportunities monitoring to make sure that our policy is effective.

We are keen to encourage people from under-represented groups to apply for jobs at the Council. At present ethnic minorities are under represented both at senior management levels and in the workforce as a whole.

If you decide to apply for a job at the Council, please let us know if you have a disability or long-term medical condition. We will make reasonable adjustments to the selection procedure and/or to the job itself, if needed because of a disability.

If you have a sight impairment, please tell us your preferred reading format for the recruitment pack (e.g. large print, electronic version). We will do our best to meet your needs.

Employee Benefits

For permanent and temporary employees there are generous holiday entitlements, occupational sick pay and maternity pay schemes. There is also a contributory pension scheme.
In addition the Council offers health workplace initiatives including fitness assessments and flu jabs.

Flexible working arrangements, including flexi-time, job sharing and part-time working, are available, depending on the type of job and the needs of the service.

Family Friendly Working Arrangements

Flexible working arrangements have been developed in order to assist those with caring responsibilities to balance the requirements of work and home. These are generally available to all employees unless there are objective reasons why they cannot be applied.

There are a variety of schemes on offer. These include a generous maternity leave scheme, adoption leave, maternity support leave, paternity leave, parental leave, time off for dependants, compassionate leave, flexi-time, job sharing, a term-time working scheme, temporarily negotiated hours and a home working scheme.

If you are interested in flexible working options, please ask what is possible for the particular vacancy you are considering.

Training & Development

As an organisation we are committed to the development of our employees and elected members and are supportive of the provision of learning and development opportunities in all areas.

Training may take place at any level, in any job and at any stage in an employee's career. In accordance with the Council's Diversity Policy, access to training facilities will not be denied on the basis of employee's sex, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, age, colour, race, nationality, ethnic or national origin or religion.

Through our Performance Management Scheme any training and development needs identified are addressed and staff are encouraged and often financially supported through both specialist and management qualification courses. We also offer a comprehensive programme of internal training to ensure all staff and Members are fully equipped to carry out the duties of their post and to prepare them for career development both within and outside the organisation. This includes personal development, health and safety training and any training necessary to meet our legal obligations.

Criminal Records Bureau (CRB)

Successful applicants for any post at Waveney District Council that involve working with children or vulnerable adults will need to complete a Disclosure Application Form.

A Disclosure is a document containing information held by the police and government departments provided by the CRB. This process enables the Council to check the background of job applicants to ensure that they do not have a history that would make them unsuitable.

The disclosure process enables the council to make informed recruitment decisions and recruit more safely.

The Employees Code of Conduct

Employees of Waveney District Council are expected to adhere to the Employee's Code of Conduct.
