Generally the walls and fences that surround property and fields
are erected and maintained by the land owner. These are erected to
provide security, privacy and to mark boundaries between different
landowners.
If you are concerned about a wall you should first determine who
owns the wall (the land owner) and, if a private individual, raise
your concerns with them.
If the wall is potentially dangerous to the public you should, in
the first instance, contact the Building Control team who will
carry out an assessment on 01502 523044.
Suffolk County Council Highways Department maintain and repair the
following types of wall;
- walls supporting the structure of the highway - these are called
Highway Retaining Walls.
- walls retaining land that has been excavated in cutting to form a
highway parapet wall on bridges.
- walls providing a safety barrier for example a steep drop at the
other side of the wall.
To report faults with these types of wall please call the County
Council on 01473 583000.
