What is bulky household waste?
By bulky household waste, we mean household items which do not fit
in the wheeled bin. For example:-
- free-standing items of furniture such as suites, beds or
wardrobes.
- fridges, cookers or washing machines
- rolls of carpet (tied or taped up)
Where possible leave items whole. If they have to be dismantled
make sure they are tied or taped and flat packed.
These are all things that you might be expected to take with you if
you moved house.
Is there a charge for this service?
Yes, because we have to make special arrangements to collect and
dispose of this waste. We charge £23.00 for UP TO 3 ITEMS to cover
the costs.
What about other types of waste?
Unfortunately, we cannot collect the following waste under the
Bulky Household Waste Service.
- loose materials such as soil (even if bagged up)
- garden waste such as prunings or tree stumps
- paving or concrete
- construction waste such as sanitaryware, baths, brick rubble or
timber
- DIY waste such as kitchen units or other fixtures &
fittings
- storage heaters, radiators, water tanks & boilers
etc
How do I go about getting my bulky household waste
collected?
Complete the request slip on the
attached leaflet and hand it in with
your payment to one of the offices listed at the foot of this
page. Make your cheque or postal order payable to: WAVENEY
DISTRICT COUNCIL. Alternatively, post the request slip and
your payment to the Town Hall, Lowestoft (address below)
Collections are made by one operative using a tail lift vehicle.
Therefore, please ensure all items are placed where there is
vehicular access, eg on your driveway, in an unlocked garage or
front garden etc , but close to the highway.
Please label the waste items and keep them well away from property
you do not want disposed of. Your items will then be collected as
soon as possible after payment so have them ready the same day if
possible. Our average collection time is about five working
days.
We cannot collect from inside buildings, flats, halls, stairwells
and landings etc. If you are infirm or immobile please make
allowance for this.
Can I dispose of waste myself?
Yes. Apart from waste paint, you can dispose of your Bulky
Household Waste at a Household Waste Site free of charge.
If you have any waste paint or trade waste to dispose of please
contact 01502 523460 for assistance. By law you MUST dispose of
your trade waste in the correct manner. We can advise you
how.
You can also take most “other types” of waste (as previously
listed) to a Household Waste Site, PROVIDED you produced the waste
yourself and not a builder or other tradesperson. Staff at these
sites may refuse to take waste if they believe it is “trade”
waste.
