Clinical Waste is as any waste that consists wholly or partly
of:
- human or animal tissue
- blood or bodily fluids
- excretions
- medicines or other pharmaceutical products
- swabs or dressings
- syringes, needles, finger pricking devices and
lancets
Find out more about clinical waste by visiting the
Department for Environment Food and Rural
Affairs (DEFRA) website.
Household clinical waste
There are certain types of clinical waste that are accepted in your
wheelie bin and do not require a specialist waste collection bin.
The most common types are used dialysis, colonstomy, and stoma
bags. Ideally, these should be double-wrapped in plastic bags when
placed in the bin. If you are unsure and require further advice,
please telephone
01502 523460.
Householders now have responsibility for disposing of their waste
properly. Full details can be found in the leaflet below.
Reporting discarded clinical waste
Officers can provide advice on how to dispose of, or collect
hazardous waste such as clinical waste, medicines and
syringes.
If you find discarded needle sticks and syringes do not touch them
as you could be injured, but call
01502 523460 and
ask for the Street Cleansing section who will remove them using the
proper equipment.
The Street Cleaning team will remove any clinical waste within one
working day after it has been reported.
Commercial Clinical Waste
Currently, the Council does not provide a commercial clinical waste
collection service. However, there are a number of contractors who
provide this service: details of which would be available from your
nearest hospital or at
www.yell.com
