Sorting Your Rubbish
Waveney District Council continues to set the very highest standards for its recycling service and you continue to respond. Thanks to your support, we are among the best councils in the country for reducing and recycling waste. But we need to do even better to cut the amount of rubbish being sent to landfill sites.

To help you make the best use of the service brought to your doorstep, we have produced comprehensive (but not exhaustive) lists of what you can put in each of your three bins.

Do take the time to look through the lists. You might consider yourself an avid recycler, but you may not be aware of the actual breadth of material that we can take away in your blue or green bin. If you are unable to view the lists, please contact using the details at the foot of this page and we can provide the information in an alternative format.

Bin contamination

Putting the wrong rubbish in the wrong bin causes recyclable material to become contaminated and can lead to it being rejected by our re-processor and ultimately ending up in landfill.

Household Waste Recycling Centres and local bring sites

Your local bring sites situated at supermarkets and other locations in the community offer the opportunity to dispose of glass, paper, textiles and cans.

In addition, the County Council run Household Waste Recycling Centres at:
  • Haddenham Road,South Lowestoft Industrial Estate
  • Fen Lane, Beccles (north side of A145 roundabout with A146), opposite Morrisons
  • Blyth Road, Southwold
can accept other non-hazardous items including:

  • Scrap metal
  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Textiles
  • Engine Oil
  • Refrigerators
  • Car Batteries
  • Spent cooking oil
  • Empty paint cans (those with liquid will not be accepted)
  • Mobile phones

Reusing, composting and purchasing choices

Don’t forget to reuse items where you can, or think if anybody else can make use of them.

Very thin film plastics (for example, carrier bags) should be put in the black bin. Experience has shown that materials made from very thin film plastics (like carrier bags, bin liner bags, black refuse sacks etc) cannot be separated out very reliably by the sorting equipment.

Reusing plastic bags or making considered choices when purchasing items can help reduce this type of waste. For example, you might choose not to bag the loose fruit and veg you select at the supermarket.

The Council is committed to diverting biodegradable waste away from the black bin, and landfill. We supply green bins for garden waste, the normal 240 litre and a smaller 140 litre for those who have less room.

The council also promotes home composting - Read more about home composting on our home composting page
