Why Compost?
Composting is Nature's way of recycling and up to 30% of household
rubbish can be composted instead being collected by bin men and
going to landfill. By composting kitchen and garden waste you can
easily improve the quality of your soil and be well on your way to
a more beautiful garden. Buying less peat based compost helps
preserve the wildlife habitats in peat bogs and saves you money!
However, if organic matter is buried in a landfill site, the
airless conditions prevent natural composting processes. The
materials ferment, producing both toxic liquids that can leach into
nearby groundwater and methane - an explosive, potent contributor
to the greenhouse effect.
Ways to Compost
Compost Bins - Suffolk councils promote reduced price compost bins
or you will find a variety of different types at garden centres.
Alternatively you could make your own container.
Wormeries - If you are a flat-dweller or have a very small garden,
and want to recycle your kitchen scraps the answer might be a
worm-bin. A wormery can be kept inside or out, on a balcony, in a
garage or shed or under your sink!
