Health and Safety at work enforcement is the joint responsibility
of local authorities and the Health & Safety
Executive (HSE).
Waveney District Council covers health and safety in shops,
warehouses, offices, hotels, catering, sports and leisure, consumer
services (launderettes, hairdressers, tyre and exhaust fitters etc)
residential care homes and churches.
The HSE covers mainly industrial activities such as factories,
building sites, mines and quarries, agriculture, railways, chemical
plants, offshore and nuclear installations and fairgrounds.
Waveney DC aims to prevent work place accidents by:
- Inspecting workplaces and enforcing the law relating to health
and safety
- Investigating accidents, dangerous occurrences and occupational
ill-health
- Providing advice and information on health and safety in the
workplace
- Promoting relevant local and national health and safety
topics
- Offering health and safety training courses
Registering your Business for Health and Safety
Purposes
If an employer intends to employ anyone to work in an office or
a shop, they are required by law to notify the appropriate
enforcing authority beforehand. They must complete and submit two
copies of form OSR1 from the HSE website to:

Reporting Health and Safety Problems
The Food and Safety team are responsible for investigating hazards
or dangerous practices in certain work premises. If you have
witnessed something dangerous where you work or at a business
premises you have visited and have been unable to resolve the
situation with the company involved you can report this to the Food
and Safety team to investigate.

Reporting Accidents at Work
Employers are required by law to report certain work-related
accidents, work-related diseases or dangerousoccurrences involving
employees or members of the public.
Accidents should be reported directly to the national Incident
Contact Centre (ICC) by telephone on 0845 300
9923, via the ICC website or by post or fax using
form F2508 which you can download from the
Health and Safety Executive's website.
